What Is ChatGPT & Why Is Everyone Talking About It?

16 January 2023 3 mins read

ChatGPT has set the internet ablaze over the last few weeks and has been mentioned all over the internet due to its revolutionary approach to AI and its quick popularity.

A person types on a laptop with an overlay graphic of a chatbot interface, featuring a robot illustration and dialogue boxes. The word "ChatGPT" is displayed at the top.

There’s a good reason that you’ve been seeing ChatGPT all over the worldwide web lately. After launching in November, this new tool from OpenAI accumulated 1,000,000 users in under a week.

To put that into perspective, that’s quicker than Instagram who took 2.5 months to reach 1 million users back in 2010.

Below you will find a few points to explain what Chat GPT actually is and why it’s an important development within the digital landscape.

So, what exactly is it?

ChatGPT is a tool powered by artificial intelligence, developed by OpenAI, a research laboratory with the mission to ‘ensure artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity’.

The tool allows users to ask a question and get an answer within a matter of seconds. Not only that, the answers ChatGPT provides have reportedly been very knowledgeable and similar to answers a (human) industry expert would produce.

Why should you be interested?

ChatGPT has the potential to disrupt a wide variety of industries and could be a possible competitor to industry giants like Google. If you don’t find that interesting, you might be in the wrong place…

Users can get high-quality answers to any question with the click of a button, where as with Google, users can search for answers but they will need to click on various links and make their own conclusions.

What else can it do?

ChatGPT could impact customer service by offering better quality chatbots that give quicker and more accurate responses to customer queries. On a similar note, the tool can also improve the quality of virtual assistants (such as Siri) and allow them to understand the context behind the conversation, in order to provide more intuitive interactions.

Other use cases for ChatGPT include:

As the tool is still quite new, the full range of possibilities are unknown but from what industry experts are saying, this launch could spark a variety of revolutionary changes.
