Introducing Chris Murfin

Our team is growing and we’re excited to introduce the new Head of Development here at Filter. Chris Murfin joined the team in June and in this article we will learn more about his background and interests.

Chris, could you describe your role in 50 words or less?

My role is to work with the development team to introduce process improvements, set standards, and overall help improve the quality and timeliness of software delivered. I help lead the technical approach to client work, across web and mobile platforms, ensuring it is in line with the company’s strategy.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I have extensive software development experience gained in over 30 years working in financial, payment systems, manufacturing, healthcare and charity sectors in the UK, Germany, Belgium and the US.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with family and travelling.

What has been the hardest problem you’ve had to solve so far in your career?

While working on a project for a major credit card company, I was challenged to reduce the run-time of a piece of third-party batch software from 90 days to less than 1 hour. It seemed daunting at first but, as is usually the case, relatively straightforward to resolve, and it ended up running in 30 minutes.

And what has been most interesting or satisfying project you’ve worked on in your career so far?

I particularly enjoyed working on a pre-paid debit card solution and was privileged to be listed as an inventor on a software patent for that solution.

What made you decide to take the opportunity to join Filter, and what excites you most about the work so far?

I am excited to join Filter, as it allows me to bring my extensive software development experience into a Head of Development role for a remote-first company. I resonate with Filter’s ethos and am excited to be part of a strong team who is passionate about creativity, design and developing quality software solutions.

What’s your current remote working set-up like?

My home office is kitted out with a MacBook Pro, Magic Mouse, two 27” monitors and a Blue Yeti microphone.

What technology trends or developments are you most excited about, looking ahead into 2022?

I anticipate that the Internet of Things and the Internet of Behaviour trends will continue to unfold in 2022. With that, it will be interesting to see how solutions can be developed to analyse the data to simplify and automate decision making, and how it can influence behaviour (for the better).
