Medivet previously distributed customer reminders for vaccinations, treatments and other scheduled activities through their Practice Management System using primarily manual processes carried out by practice staff.
The system sent templated communications via standard SMTP gateway, providing limited insights into deliverability and interactions with reminder communications, while being unable to scale with business growth ambitions.
Following agile and MVP principles, the team created a prototype new Reminders Microservice application. The project included migrating current reminder communications from the existing delivery protocol to a new SMTP service for accurate understanding of deliverability and interactions.
We developed a reminders microservice in Microsoft Azure to parse and process reminder data files, apply grouping logic to eliminate unnecessary messages, map reminders to pre-defined templates and route personalised messages to client-specified delivery channels.
The reminders engine now processes tens of thousands of reminders daily, with messages increasing from 1 million in 2019 to over 2 million in 2020. Over 100 separate templates have been configured, each with variants for email, SMS and postal services.
A high cadence release and development cycle managed through a tightly defined roadmap has allowed the business to extend the engine’s coverage to new product categories and delivery platforms, demonstrating the continuing effectiveness of the solution.
